Technology detail
The next evolution in PON technologies
- 50G-PON is an International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T G.9804) standard for delivering next-generation capabilities for FTTx deployments.
- Defined as ITU-T G.9804 HSP, 50G-PON establishes the framework for the next evolution in passive optical networking.
- 50G-PON supports both asymmetric (50G downstream / 25G upstream) and symmetric (50G downstream / 50G upstream) configurations on the same fiber, giving CSPs the flexibility to target residential and business market segments simultaneously.
- 50G-PON operates at 1286nm +/- 2nm upstream and 1342nm +/- 2nm downstream, allowing it to coexist on the same fiber as existing GPON and XGS-PON deployments without disrupting current services.
- This wavelength separation gives CSPs exceptional flexibility and a lower total cost of ownership by reusing existing fiber infrastructure rather than deploying new ones.
- Support for higher-speed business and wholesale leased line services eliminates the need for dedicated separate networks and fibers, simplifying infrastructure and reducing overall deployment complexity.
- A single converged network provides common management, increased automation, and reduced operational costs — while allowing CSPs to leverage existing investments in resources, infrastructure, and people.
- Allows a physical broadband network including the PON to be partitioned into multiple logical networks, called a network slice, delivering services on par with dedicated active Ethernet networks while still using a single wavelength for all subscribers.
- Slices may be statically reserved or dynamically created, allocated, and removed — and each slice can have distinct bandwidth, QoS, and latency parameter settings.
- Slices can be established to provide business subscribers with a minimum bandwidth guarantee, while offering a significantly higher non-guaranteed bandwidth class.
- Service in one slice can be guaranteed for throughput, latency, and jitter without impacting other logical slices.
- Slice isolation enables per-slice performance, traffic separation, security, privacy, and end-to-end management and orchestration.
